On the Road in Peru, Between Ruins

The distances in Peru are long and we’ve seen things of interest along the way. This is a smattering of things we’ve seen along the way in the countryside, in towns and cities largely between treks to significant Incan Ruins. We thought they deserved a post of their own.

Driving through the Santuario Vicunas in the Reserva Nacional Pampa Galeras we saw these Vicunas, wild Llamas. They are rounded up annually and shorn to utilize the wool then returned to the wild for another year.

The Incan Ruins of Ollantaytambo in the town of the same name is a place where Spanish conquistadors suffered one of a their few major battle losses. Spears, arrows and rocks hurled down from above prevented them from taking the high citadel.

Incan ruins abound near Cuzco and in the sacred valley. The stepped terraces of the Moray ruin were an experiment in agriculture testing various crops at different elevations.

Moray terraces. Instead of cutting staircases between terraces which are prone to erosion, here they cantilevered large stones from the wall to access the terraces above and below.
